The Diapering Station
Set up one or two dedicated changing spots with everything within arm's reach: diapers, wipes, a change of clothes, and barrier cream. If you use a changing table, keep one hand on the baby at all times — even newborns can surprise you with a sudden roll. A changing pad on the floor is the safest option and works just as well.
How to Change a Diaper
Open the clean diaper and lay it flat under the baby before unfastening the dirty one. Use the inside front of the dirty diaper to wipe away as much stool as possible before using wipes. Clean front to back — this matters especially for baby girls to prevent urinary tract infections. For boys, place a wipe or cloth over the penis immediately when you open the diaper; the air triggers urination. Lift the legs by the ankles, slide out the dirty diaper, and slide the clean one into place. Fasten the tabs snugly — tight enough that one finger fits between the diaper and the belly. For newborns, fold the top of the diaper down to keep it below the umbilical cord stump.
