The Fourth Trimester
What the three months after birth actually are
What the Fourth Trimester Is
The period from birth through roughly 12 weeks is the fourth trimester, the time when the baby is essentially completing outside the womb what they weren't quite finished inside, and the time when the postpartum person's body is doing the enormous work of recovery. It is not a metaphor. It is a physiological fact.
What Your partner Body Is Doing
What Your partner Needs from You
The Protection Layer
The most consistent finding across cultures is that new birthing parents should be protected from the outside world for 40 days. China's zuo yuezi, India's Ayurvedic tradition, Korea's seaweed soup and rest, Latin America's cuarentena, every culture arrived at the same answer independently. Take the visitors out of the equation. Your partner can see people when they're ready. That decision is theirs.
Your Relationship in the Fourth Trimester
The relationship doesn't end because a baby arrives, but it changes shape dramatically. Emotional connection and intimacy often go underground while survival mode is active. This is normal. Keep talking. Keep checking in. The relationship is not eroding; it is adapting. Give it time and give it attention.
