When You Are Pregnant Again
How a second pregnancy and birth may be different from the first
Every Pregnancy Is Unique
A second pregnancy will not be exactly like your first. Physical changes may happen sooner because your body has been through this before. You may feel the baby move earlier. Your belly may show sooner. Braxton Hicks contractions may be more noticeable. These differences are normal and expected. What may be harder to predict is how you will feel emotionally. Some people feel more confident the second time. Others feel more anxious because they know what is coming. Both responses are normal.
How Labor May Be Different
Second labors are typically shorter than first labors. The average second labor is about half the length of the first. Your body knows what to do. The cervix may efface and dilate more quickly. Pushing is often shorter, sometimes just a few contractions. Because labor can progress faster, it is wise to go to the hospital or birth center earlier than you did the first time. If your first labor was very fast, be especially cautious about waiting too long before heading in.
Preparing Your Older Child
How you prepare your older child depends on their age and temperament. Read books about becoming a big sibling. Talk about the baby growing in your belly. Let them feel the baby move. Bring them to a prenatal visit if possible. Make sure they know what will happen when you go to the hospital, who will care for them, and that you will come back. If your hospital allows children at the birth, prepare them for what they may see and hear. If they are not attending, make sure their caregiver is someone they know and trust.
Helping Siblings Adjust After Birth
When you come home with the new baby, greet your older child first before showing them the baby. Let them help with small tasks like fetching a diaper or choosing the baby's outfit. Have a gift ready from the baby to the older sibling. Set aside one-on-one time with each parent for the older child every day, even if it is just 10 minutes. Reassure them that there is enough love for everyone. Expect some regression in behavior. This is normal and temporary.
