The Pushing Stage
What happens during second stage and how to support

When Pushing Begins
The second stage of labor begins when the cervix is fully dilated at 10 centimeters. The baby begins to descend through the birth canal, and the birthing person will feel a strong, involuntary urge to bear down. This sensation is different from contractions. It is pressure, not cramping. For many people, this stage feels like relief because they finally have something active to do instead of just enduring contractions.
Your Role During Pushing
- Support whatever position the birthing person chooses.
- Coach with encouragement, not timekeeping.
- Offer water between contractions.
- Cool cloth on the forehead. Do not fill the space with chatter.
After the Baby Is Born
Skin-to-skin contact immediately. Cord clamping is usually delayed. The placenta follows within 5 to 30 minutes. Your presence matters from the first moment.
