The Three Rs: Relaxation, Rhythm, Ritual
The foundation of all labor support
What Are the Three Rs?
All effective labor support rests on three foundations: Relaxation (releasing held tension between contractions), Rhythm (any repetitive, predictable pattern of breath, movement, or sound), and Ritual (doing the same thing the same way with every contraction). If one of the three is breaking down, that is the thing to address. Watch for the signs and step in before the birthing person spirals further.
Relaxation
Between contractions, help your partner release all tension. The most common mistake is to stay braced for the next wave. Instead, encourage: melted shoulders, dropped jaw, loose hands, a heavy sigh. Each exhalation is a chance to let go.
Rhythm
Labor has its own rhythm, your job is to entrain yourself to it. Breathe with your partner, sway together, nod your head in time. When you stay in rhythm, your partner feels accompanied rather than alone.
Ritual
A ritual is a repeated action that marks each contraction. It can be internal (a visualization, a mantra) or external (a specific touch, a phrase you repeat). Rituals create predictability and comfort. Examples: counting breaths, squeezing your hand in a specific pattern, pressing on the lower back in circles, saying 'In and out' with each breath.
